Chladnite

Named by Charles Upham Shepard in 1846 in honor of Ernst Florens Friedrich Chladni [November 30, 1756 Wittenberg. Germany - April 3, 1827 Wrocław, Poland (then Prussia)]. In 1794, Chladni proposed that meteorites were extraterrestrial, counter to the commonly held view that meteorites were products of Earth's atmosphere. Chladni's views were not widely accepted until after the great meteorite storm of April 26, 1803, when over 3,000 stoney meteorites were observed and collected at L"Aigle, Normandy, France and which were witnessed by public officials and other "respectable" citizens. Chladni investigated the speed of sound, particularly is solids, and mathematical analysis of acoustics. He investigated Robert Hooke's studies on harmonic patterns developed on vibrating surfaces. These are now often referred to as Chladni patterns or Chladni figures. Chladni improved on the design and a musical instrument, the Musical Cylinder devised by Robert Hooke, and renamed it the Clavicylinder and he invented the euphonium.
