A low metamorphic grade, argillaceous slate, as distinguished from the more metamorphosed micaceous varieties that border on phyllite, and slates derived from tuffaceous rocks. It is derived from argillaceous rock, such as shale or mudstone, with slaty cleavage developed by shearing or pressure.
