Acadiolite

Name:
A name given by Charles Jackson and Francis Alger, that appears in Thomson (1834). It is for the French colony of Acadia, in eastern Canada that existed from 1604 to the early 1700s and that includes the locality where the material was discovered.
Synonym:
A synonym of Chabazite
Refers to orange and red chabazite first found in Nova Scotia.


The material was found by Alger and Jackson in the 1820s and described but not named at that time. They write 'The chabasie, grouped with its associated minerals, is usually of a wine yellow or flesh red color.'

The name first appears in Thomson (1843). He writes that it was named by Alger and Jackson as 'acadiolite' though it appears as 'acadialite' in most other later publications. Thomson refers to the color as yellow. But other publications describe it as red or orange, which is the color typically seen at Wasson's Bluff where it was first found (https://www.mindat.org/loc-4526.html).

Gustav Rose did measurements on the angles between the crystal faces that showed they were the same as chabazite. This is mentioned as a note in a paper by Hoffmann (1832) that argues that the material from Nova Scotia is a distinct species because of high amounts of silica. Hoffmann's paper was translated to English by Cramer. Eventually, more and more mineralogists regarded it simply as chabazite. A more modern chemical comparison is given in Walker and Parsons (1922).
