Quartz-eclogite

Qaurtz-eclogite is an eclogite that contains quartz as a notable, though not dominant, mineral component. There are no strict upper or lower limits on the amount of quartz required to classify a rock as quartz-eclogite. Instead, the term is used to highlight specific petrological or geological features that distinguish these rocks from other types of eclogite.

Quartz-eclogites form from relative silica-rich basic protoliths, including basalts (Miller et al., 2005) and gabbros (Okay et al., 1985). Quartz eclogites may also form from mixtures of basic and more silica-rich sediments as reported by Miyamoto et al.(2007).

At Ultra-High Pressure (UHP) conditions quartz are transformed into its high pressure polymorph coesite.
