Name:
Named by Hans Gabriel Trolle-Wachtmeister before 1838, in honor of Christian Samuel Weiss [26 February 1780 Leipzig – 1 October 1856 Eger, Bohemia]. Weiss established mathematical principles of mineralogy and established what is now known as the Weiss Zone Law in crystallography. The mineral was from Erick Matt's Mine, Fahlun, Sweden. Analysis quoted from Trolle-Wachtmeister by Thomson (1838) indicated a similarity to clinochlore. Thomson's own analysis of a supposed weissite from a completely different locality in Lower Canada was more similar to a chamosite.
Described as an unusual white variety of chlorite (clinochlore). Compare also leuchtenbergite.
