Formula:
(Ca,Na,◻)19(Al,Mg,Fe3+)13(◻,B,Al,Fe3+)5(Si2O7)4(SiO4)10(OH,F,O)10
Name:
A name introduced by J. v. Lobo da Silveira in 1810 for a greenish mineral described by C.A. Murray in 1807 from Gökum limestone quarry, Dannemora, Sweden. The mineral showed the chemical composition and physical properties similar to vesuvianite, but was first thought to be a different species. Berzelius analyzed the mineral and found it to contain an amount of Mg. Since gahnite was a name already given to another mineral, Berzelius changed the name to loboit, in honor of J.v. Lobo da Silveira. In 1836 a new analysis was made by Thompson, who again named it gökumite, after the locality.
