Unique in being the only carbon-bearing sulfide mineral. Occurs widely in Cambrian shales. Previously thought to be jordisite. Has layered structure, with graphite-like and molybdenite-like packets. The layers are randomly oriented and arranged in subspherical cells. Occurs as pseudomorphoses after fossil bacteria.
Reported to be common in metalliferous black shales of Cambrian age.
