Name:
From the Greek σποδιος, "spodios", ash-gray, referring to its color.
Originally proposed formula: Ca2(PO4)F. Discredited since a reinvestigation of the type material showed it to be a mixture (Holtstam, 2004).
Goryainovite, Ca2(PO4)Cl, is the Cl analogue, also known as a synthetic compound.

Originally reported from Krangruvan, Nyttsta ore field, Filipstad, Värmland, Sweden.
