Name:
Named in 1872 by Nils Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld in honor of Colonel Carl Axel Arrhenius [29 March 1757 Stockholm, Sweden – 20 November 1824 Sweden]. Arrhenius was a chemist in the military who found a mineral at Ytterby, Sweden which he named ytterbite. Johann Gadolin analzed this mineral and discovered the first four of the rare earth elements: ytterbium, yttrium, erbium, and terbium.
A tantalate and silicate of the rare earths (Y and Er), Ca, Zr, etc. Probably a mixture.
