About Scandium-bearing Ixiolite (of von Knorring)Hide

Von Knorring et al. (1969) described scandian ixiolite from Mozambique and Madagascar. The content of Sc2O3 in these these varied from 7.50 wt% (Naquissupa, Mozambique) to 2.10 wt% (Antsirabe, Madagascar) and 5.10 wt% (Betanimena, Madagascar). Later it was discussed if this could be a new species because of the Nb-dominance (ixiolite is defined as being Ta-dominant). Wise et al. (1998) studied samples of Nb-dominant scandian ixiolite from the Naquissupa and Muiane pegmatites, Mozambique. These had a content of Sc2O3 from 6.8 to 11.1wt%. Lykova et al. (2021) verified these to be nioboheftetjernite, cf. discussions in Taddei et al. (2026).
This does not imply that all samples that originates from Mozambique and labelled as scandian ixiolite in collections are nioboheftetjernite. Individual analysis are needed.
