About TasmaniteHide

Tasmanite is an amber-coloured organic matter derived from burial of the prasinophyte alga Tasmanites punctatus. It is commonly associated with high-latitude, nutrient-rich, marginal marine settings found in Tasmania, especially in the Permian mudstones of northern Tasmania. It was mined at Latrobe and other areas for the oil content.

Where the rock is rich in this organic matter, it is commonly called Tasmanite also. The rock is classified as marine type oil shale, and has been mined for oil.
