About NuummiteHide

Name:
The name Nuummite which means "derived from Nuuk" in Greenlandic was given to the amphibolitic rock type which was found by the geologist Peter W. Uitterdijk Appel in 1982, near Nuuk (Godthåb). Appel considered first the name nuukite, but renamed it to Nuummite, which in Greenlandish means "from Nuuk". The government granted the company Nuummite Nuuk A/S, wholly owned by Nuuk commune an exploration concession for Nuummite in the Nuuk area, as well as permission to manufacture and sell Nuummite jewelry. The company is based in Nuuk.

Among the samples stored in the Mineralogical Museum, Copenhagen, Denmark, collected by L. K. Giesecke in 1810, were samples of this rock from Nuuk.
An unapproved name for a metamorphic rock with iridescent orthoamphiboles (Anthophyllite-Gedrite Series), the material is sometimes cut and polished as a gemstone.
Rodgers et al. (1996) investigated the material from one locality at the Simiuttat Island (Greenland) and found that the golden iridescent rocks consisted of <1-100 mm crystals of alternating submicron-thick lamellae of anthophyllite and gedrite. The morphology of the lamellae is consistent with an origin by spinodal decomposition (Champness and Rodgers, 2000).

Found in eight localities within 50 km of Nuuk, Greenland, all in orthoamphibolite pods within quartz-gneisses of the Akulleq terrane.
