Named in 1852 by James Curtis Booth in honor of Edward Remington [d. December 29, 1897 Williamsport, Pennsylvania, USA], the first superintendent of the Patapsco Mines of Finksburg, Maryland, USA. Remington had earlier (1848) been a superintendent of a copper mine in Flemington, New Jersey. "[Edward Remington] was born in Philadelphia, and was of English descent, being a direct descendant of John Pym, known as “King” Pym (1584-1643), of Cromwell’s time, the acknowledged leader of the Short and Long Parliaments, on his mother’s side, and of Sir Henry Remington, on his father’s. He received a collegiate education and then engaged in the wholesale silk business in Philadelphia in which he was successful until thrown from a horse; thereafter he was compelled to give up active business and the excitement of city life. Some time later he became president of several mining companies in New Jersey and Maryland. He married a daughter of Judge John Reading, of New Jersey, who, with two sons and three daughters survived him, at his death which occurred at his late home, “Grapeside”, near Williamsport, December 29, 1897. ... Edward Remington, severed his connection with the mining companies and purchased, in 1873, the saw mill and 1500 acres of land in Armstrong and Nippenose Townships from Marshall Atwood, and engaged in the lumber business. Then in 1873, he formed with four other men the Quaker Valley Grape Company, establishing vineyards on certain tracts from which the timber had been cut. (Anspach, Marshall R. A material that was originally described as a cobalt carbonate (Booth, 1852). A non-type specimen labeled "remingtonite" was a cobalt-mineral on serpentine matrix, but there was insufficient mineral to characterize (Shannon, 1924). The mineral was presumed to be an erythrite stain, by some opinions, but remingtonite may be an extinct mineral species with no known specimens to represent it.
