About Cave OnyxHide

Name:
From its similarity to onyx and its limestone origins.
A variety of banded calcite of karst (stalagmitic) origin showing patterns similar to onyx. Often cut and used as a decorative stone.

Note: the name 'onyx' is used frequently for materials made from this material. This is incorrect and confusing and should not be encouraged. True onyx is quartz (hardness 7); this material is much softer (hardness 3) and has very much lower acid resistance.

This material is characteristic of karst environments, and can be found worldwide.
