Name:
From the Greek ΰοτριζ, a porcupine.
This was originally recorded by Petterd (1910) as a possible new mineral (a sulfide of bismuth and antimony) from the Curtin Davis mine at North East Dundas, associated with chalcopyrite and pyrite in semi-massive tetrahedrite plus bismuthinite. Crystals from a vugh were in bunches of acute-terminated orthorhombic prisms up to 50 mm in length, and it was also massive and foliated. Fresh surfaces were steel grey but tarnished to yield a bluish iridescence. Two analyses (Petterd, 1910) of “pure” material gave Cu, Fe, Sb, Bi and S. The material was stated to be “pure antimony bismuth sulfide” but considerable copper and iron are present. No specimen of the material is now available but, if the analyses are correct, it appears possible that it was a mixture of bismuthinite, jamesonite, boulangerite and other minerals.
