Named in 1856 by Wilhelm Karl von Haidinger in honor of Gustav Adolph Kenngott [January 6, 1818 Breslau {now Wrocław}, Poland- March 7, 1897 Lugano, Ticino, Switzerland]. Kenngott, a systematic mineralogist and professor of mineralogy at the University of Zürich, was also an author of a series of successful color plate mineralogy books.
