Taconite (also spelled taconyte)
The cherty or jaspery rock that enclosed the Mesabi iron ores in Minnesota. In a somewhat more general sense, it designates any bedded ferruginous chert of the Lake Superior district. [Stokes and Varnes, 1955.]
In Minnesota practice, it is any grade of extremely hard, lean iron ore that has its iron either in banded or well disseminated form and which may be hematite or magnetite, or a combination of the two within the same or body. [Cumming]
