About Darwin Glass
An impact glass or Impact-melt-rock formed from a meteorite impact near Mt Darwin, SE of Queenstown, Tasmania, Australia.
Loftus Hills named this Darwin glass, which formed 816,000 years ago by a meteorite impact creating the Darwin Crater, melting the local sandstones and siltstones, with the impact glass now scattered in a strewn field over many square km. This glassy material ranges from pale green to black and exhibits swirling, ropy textures with vesicles, a result of the intense heat and pressure from the cosmic collision melting local rocks.
Aboriginal Tasmanians used this sharp, lightweight glass, which they called mana, for tools and ritual practices.
