A synonym of "Herkimer-style" Quartz
Quartz crystals similar to the well known "Herkimer diamonds" were collected from the cliffs above Vieux Québec by the crew of the second North American voyage of Jacques Cartier in 1535. These were carried back to France and were believed to be diamonds, until experts identified them as quartz crystals. The cliffs still bear the name Cap Diamant given by Cartier.
This greatly pre-dates the discovery of herkimer-type quartz in Herkimer, New York, and might be the oldest recorded mineral occurrence in Canada.
