Named in 1961 by Oleg von Knorring and Keith Gordon Cox in honor of William Quarrier Kennedy [November 30, 1903 UK - March 13, 1979 Harrowgate, Yorkshire, UK], geologist for the Geological Survey of Great Britain and professor of geology at Leeds University and founder of the Research Institute of African Geology, and briefly with the Geological Survey of Malaya. Discredited in 1988 as Mg-bearing pseudobrookite.
