First described from Ramberget, Hestmona Island (Hestmannøy; Hestmandö), Rødøy, Nordland, Norway. Donath (1931) reported a zinc-rich chromite from Ramberget and Værnesfjell, Nordland, Norway. Later, Seeliger and Mücke (I969), on the basis of the original analyses and XRD analyses found that this was not a Zn-rich chromite, but a tetragonal mineral, and described this as a new mineral which was named Donathite. Moore (1977) reinvestigated the mineral but found only small amounts of zinc (approximately 0.3 % ZnO). Analyses of a sample of the original material described by Donath (1931) also gave similar results. Finally Burns et al. (1997) showed it to be a mixture of 2 spinel minerals and discredited donathite as a mineral species.
