Name:
Named by Thomas Sterry Hunt in 1849 after Francis Alger [March 8, 1807 Bridgewater, MA, USA - November 27, 1863 Washington, DC, USA], Boston iron manufacturer, chemist, and mineral collector. Alger revised Phillips' Mineralogy in 1844. The Cyrus A. Alger Iron Works of South Boston, Massachusetts manufactured canons and various exploding ordnance. The Alger Tunnel at Franklin, New Jersey was opened by the Alger Iron Works and reputedly added franklinite directly to their iron as a natural alloy ore.
Square unterminated prisms to several cm, rarely shows the normal pyramid. Varies from fresh to an altered meionite partly replaced by muscovite and possibly minor vesuvianite.
