It’s a showdown with rare earth elemental ore Monazite-(Ce) and index mineral Andalusite.
Monazite-(Ce) is the most common member of the monazite group of minerals where phosphates bond with rare earth elements. The whole group named for the Greek for “to be solitary” (μουάζω) in tribute to their rarity with this mineral carrying the “-(Ce)” suffix to identify that it’s the cerium-dominant mineral . Even though monazite-Ce is cerium-rich, it always contains at least some other rare earth element (like neodymium, lanthanum, or samarium) or a radioactive pairing of calcium with uranium or thorium. When the uranium or thorium decays, the crystals trap helium which can be extracted by heating the mineral. The cerium is also relatively easy to extract, and is used to polish glass, dope blue diodes to produce white LEDs, and in catalytic converters.
Named for a mistaken belief that it was discovered in Andalusia, Spain, the first studied samples of andalusite were actually from Guadalajara. Andalusite is part of a trio of polymorphs where each of the three are index minerals that help scientists understand the conditions under which a host rock formed. It’s the lower-pressure, mid-temperature polymorph of 2025 champion kyanite and sillimanite. It is highly resistant to heat, making it an excellent refractory material. The crystals form nearly square cross-sections, and can have visually-distinctive cross-shaped carbon inclusions that made it popular with Spanish pilgrims.
