| Comments: | Glyn Francis lists Manganite as: "Pseudomorphs of pyrolusite after manganite were common in the western and northern side of the orebody, particularly between RL216 and RL150. Crystals reached up to 5cm in length, but were commonly less than 1cm, and covered areas of fractures and cavities up to 40cm across. In 1983, a search to find manganite which had not been altered was undertaken, and even though material was collected from every locality in the quarry, and any material that had even a slightly different habit was obtained, ALL material was found to be altered to pyrolusite. In 1987, the Mn-carbonate area on RL130 was exposed, small (less than 1mm) crystals of unaltered manganite had grown in cavities with calcite and rhodochrosite near the western edge of this zone. These black lustrous crystals represent the only valid manganite found anywhere in Iron Monarch, and manganite can be classed locally as a rare mineral. | |
