Biography
Comprised of vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Brendan Perry and vocalist Lisa Gerrard, Dead Can Dance moved to London, England in 1982 and signed with the highly-respected label 4AD. The bandâs self-titled debut album arrived in 1984 introducing Dead Can Danceâs considered and seemingly ritualistic soundscapes to an alternative rock audience. The group later contributed two songs to the album âItâll End in Tearsâ by This Mortal Coil, a multi-artist session by the the owner of 4AD Ivo Watts-Russel, followed by the EP âGarden of the Arcaneâ in August 1984.
The release of their sophomore album âSpleen and Idealâ help developed Dead Can Danceâs cult European following and reached No. 2 on the UK indie chart. Dead Can Dance consolidated their sound, tone and appeal with the release of their third studio album âWithin the Realm of a Dying Sunâ in 1986 and fourth âThe Serpentâs Eggâ in 1988. The same year, the group wrote the score for the film âEl NiÃąo de la Lunaâ in which Gerrard earned her first acting credit, and two years later in 1990, Dead Can Dance released their fifth full-length album âAionâ, which was supported by their first tour of the U.S.
In 1993 the album âInto the Labyrinthâ became the bandâs first album to be released in the States and proved another critical success for the ethereal-wave band. The album was supported by a more extensive touring schedule and subsequently, in 1995, Gerrard released her solo album âThe Mirror Poolâ. After the release of âSpiritchaserâ, Dead Can Danceâs seventh studio album, the band broke up, and Gerrard focused on providing the scores to films including âHeatâ, âThe Insiderâ and âGladiatorâ.
Both Perry and Gerrard continued to work independently until 2004 when the pair reunited and embarked on a world tour. A greatest hits album âMemento: The Very Best of Dead Can Danceâ was issued in 2005, followed by âAnastasisâ in 2012, the groupâs first album of new material in 16 years.
Live reviews
I saw Dead Can Dance live at Coachella in 2012. As they entered the stage, shrouded in darkness, both old fans and new instantly knew them for who they were and cheered.
The slow melodic tones began in hushed whispers and rose slowly to louder volumes. Then the lights came on and the wind machines started blowing their hair, and the haunting, chanting melodies they are known for began.
Move over Enya, you've got competition, I thought. They played instruments expertly, sang in tones that one imagines no longer even exist, and played the crowd like experts.
Watching Dead Can Dance is a little bit like watching a play about a medieval band. They sing about being children of the sun, their female keyboard player wears a long flowing cape, and other than the bright green stage lights you would not know their stage presence from that of a medieval band. As their female vocalist began singing at low volumes it slowly intensified into something more impressive than any type of Celtic or chanting song that I have ever heard. This was an experience with this type of music like no other before or after it. It was haunting, melodic, and impressive.
That was an old dream of mine,to them live on stage. I'm so happy I got the opportunity. The concert was just as good as perfect. Everything was made with the right touch and they perform most of my favorite songs. I can't deny it, I had tears in my eyes through the whole concert. Bravo! They really made me happy.

Probably the best concert of the year !!! Exciting from beginning to end. I also loved the initial intervention of David, fundamental piece in this formation. Age only gave them experience and increased the good taste. I hope to see you for many more years.

Perfect concert. Great performance. My only complaint is about the audience. They should be more respectful about moving non-stop during the concert.
This was not a standing rock concert. So if you cannot tolerate alcohol, you should not drink that much..

I have always wanted to see DCD but for some reason I missed their shows.
Finally I managed to see them yesterday, May 23 2019. There are few words that can describe what happened last night. It was overwhelming.

GREAT VOICES FROM BOTH LISA AND BRENDAN, GREAT MUSICALITY AND GREAT CHOICE OF SONGS FROM THEIR CAREER. I HOPE I SEE THEM AGAIN LIVE WITHIN NEXT COUPLE YEARS AGAIN. THOROUGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Oh my God. I don't have any words. Top 5 concerts in my life and Dead can Dance is one of them I've cried for half of the show and the other half I was smiling :)

It was a really great performance, at a breathtaking location. We all loved every single note of the amazing Dead can dance songs. I am really grateful I had the opportunity to be there.
