Putnisite, Quartz

Armstrong Ni Mine, Widgiemooltha, Coolgardie Shire, Western Australia, Australia

A couple of purple putnisite patches are clearly visible, there are several more which requires magnification. According to the South Australian Museum the bluey-green stuff is an amorphous cr material, although it would not surprise me if the minor light green material is a secondary nickel species. To the right is an area of transparent ...

Putnisite

Armstrong Ni Mine, Widgiemooltha, Coolgardie Shire, Western Australia, Australia

Pink-purple putnisite, unique Sr-Cr-Ca hydrated hydrous sulphato-carbonate mineral. Not sure, but the matrix seem to contain a dark material that might possibly be chromite??

Putnisite

Armstrong Ni Mine, Widgiemooltha, Coolgardie Shire, Western Australia, Australia

A small piece of serpentine matrix (6mm x 5mm x 2mm), consisting of an amorphous chrome silicate mineral and quartz, with micro cleavages of purple putnisite. This image shows the largest putnisite cleavage which I still require magnification to see, it is not a well defined crystal but the cubic habit is evident. Putnisite crystals are small, ...

A split crystal of deep purple putnisite in clear quartz. Thanks to Rod Martin for the specimen.

Putnisite, Quartz, Actinolite, Aragonite

Armstrong Ni Mine, Widgiemooltha, Coolgardie Shire, Western Australia, Australia

A single very tiny deep purple orthorhombic crystal of the extremely rare mineral putnisite, on a matrix of colourless quartz crystals and black actinolite, with some yellow aragonite staining. Specimen gifted to me by Joel Williams on 19 June, 2026. See annotations. The micromount specimen is extremely tiny. Ex. Joel Williams collection.
