Eskasoni First Nation
Nestled along the picturesque shores of the Bras d’Or Lake in Eastern Cape Breton Island, Eskasoni First Nation stands proudly as the largest Mi’kmaq community in the world. Our community is deeply rooted in Mi’kmaq culture, home to the largest Mi’kmaq-speaking population, where traditional knowledge and values are cherished and passed down through generations.
Eskasoni has built a strong foundation for growth and prosperity, with a community-operated school system from kindergarten to grade 12, a supermarket, community rink, and cultural centre. A thriving private sector further supports the community’s development.
With a vibrant population of 4,500+ members, Eskasoni prioritizes the health and well-being of its youth through events and initiatives that foster active, healthy lifestyles. Guided by a deep respect for the environment and a shared sense of responsibility, the community continues to thrive as a culturally rich and dynamic place.

OUR
History
Establishment of Eskasoni (1832)
Eskasoni was officially established as a reserve in 1832. Initially, the Mi’kmaq community was smaller and primarily focused on subsistence living through fishing and farming. Over time, Eskasoni grew as other Mi’kmaq families from nearby regions moved to the community.
During the mid-20th century, many Indigenous communities, including Eskasoni, faced assimilation policies and cultural suppression, particularly through the residential school system. However, Eskasoni resisted the loss of its language and traditions, becoming a center for Mi’kmaq language preservation and education.
By the late 20th century, Eskasoni began to thrive as a cultural and educational hub for the Mi’kmaq Nation. Efforts to revitalize the Mi’kmaq language were spearheaded by the creation of language programs and the establishment of Mi’kmaq immersion schools.
Eskasoni is now the largest Mi’kmaq community in the world and a leader in cultural preservation, environmental stewardship, and community well-being. It hosts cultural events, provides extensive social services, and remains a strong advocate for Indigenous rights and self-determination.
