This is the story of the Building of the Panama Railroad between 1849 and 1855. This railroad was built fifty years before the Panama Canal and carried half a billion dollars of gold, and much U.S. mail without a single loss. This, despite bandits and the loss of thousands of lives to illness and accidents. The railroad faded away as the U.S. transcontinental railroad made its way from coast to coast, but it was a marvel of its time. With map on end papers. 224 pages with index.

This is an excellent, very readable account of the amazing effort to build and operate a railroad across the primitive Isthmus of Panama in the mid-1800s. The technical, cultural, logistical, and disease challenges that were ultimately conquered to create what became for a time the most valuable stock on the New York Stock Exchange would likely prove daunting to entrepreneurs and engineers today--witness the "Darien Gap" in the Pan-American Highway. Today's Panama Canal Railroad is the fourth incarnation of this trans-isthmian line, but Rails Across Panama remains the standard work on the first Panama Railroad.

This book is well written and is an important read for anyone wanting to understand the building of the Panama Canal and why it was important for a railroad to be built across the isthmus so that the canal could be built. It gives you an understanding of the lives and monies lost and the politics involved to accomplish the building feats. The historian will want it for their libraries. Not difficult to read so most anyone will be able to appreciate this book. I highly recommend it.

You forget that you are reading - such is the power of Joseph L. Schott's historical description of the "Yankee Strip" and all its entangled green marvels during the construction of the first intercontinental railroad.
