Released in 1994, the album pushed the band beyond their New York hardcore roots into a tighter, machine-driven sound that echoed both Ministry’s industrial aggression and Helmet’s disciplined riff geometry. Guitarist-vocalist Tommy Victor sculpted metallic riffs that loop and pulse like circuitry — repetitive yet magnetic, creating a trance through syncopated downstrokes and rigid rhythmic symmetry.
Tracks like “Whose Fist Is This Anyway?” and “Broken Peace” ride relentless palm-muted patterns that feel almost algorithmic, while “Snap Your Fingers, Snap Your Neck” became a genre anthem — its hypnotic, single-string riff functioning more like a mantra than a melody. The band’s 1994 album, Cleansing, is a Drop C-tuned slowed-down Nu/Metalcore variation of their previous three. Once, this kind of post-Obituary “slowed-down hardcore-metal” was a favorite of MTV’s Headbanger’s Ball and Beavis & Butthead metalhead snots, but nowadays this thing has become extremely outdated.
