Morfologia

Długość ciała 12,5–16 cm; masa ciała 14–30 g[10].

Systematyka

Rodzaj zdefiniował w 1845 roku angielski etnolog i przyrodnik Brian Houghton Hodgson w artykule zatytułowanym O ptakach z Leiotrichidae z regionu Subhimalajów, opublikowanym w czasopiśmie „The journal of the Asiatic Society of Bengal ”[2]. Gatunkiem typowym jest (oznaczenie monotypowe) wróbel żółtogardły (G. xanthocollis).

Etymologia

  • Gymnoris (Gymnorius, Gymnornis) i Gymnorhis: γυμνος gumnos ‘goły, nagi’; ῥις rhis, ῥινος rhinos ‘nozdrza’[11][12].
  • Pyrgitina: rodzaj Pyrgita Cuvier, 1816 (wróbel); łac. przyrostek zdrabniający -ina[13]. Gatunek typowy: nie podany.
  • Xanthodira i Xanthodina: gr. ξανθος xanthos ‘żółty’; δειρη deirē ‘gardło’[14][15]. Gatunek typowy (późniejsze oznaczenie)[16]: Xanthodira flavigula Sundevall, 1850.
