日本代表が3大会連続での
決勝トーナメント出場を決めた。
グループリーグは1勝2分けの勝ち点5。
史上初めて負けなしでの
グループリーグ突破となり、
日本代表の力を見せつけることができた。
スウェーデンとの3回戦は、
難しい戦いになったと思う。
結果だけ見れば引き分けだが、
その結果の裏には、
何位で勝ち上がるかの
探り合いがあったと思う。
他のグループの結果や、
同グループ暫定首位の
オランダの結果が、
日本にも影響を与える可能性があった。
どこに進もうとも、
簡単な試合はない。
しかし、本当に優勝を考えた時に、
ここには入れたらうれしい
という組み合わせは、
少なからずあるということだ。
ただ、ひとつ言えることは、
”上がるかどうか”、ではなく、
「どう上がるか」、を考えられている
というのが日本にとっては大きな進化だ。
2002年日韓ワールドカップでの
初の決勝トーナメント進出から24年。
私は現在26歳なので、
ほぼ私の人生全てと同じ時間をかけて、
日本代表は、何位で上がるかを計算できる
ほどの位置まで来ている。
世界の強豪相手に幾度となく
夢を打ち砕かれ、
あと一歩のところで
悔し涙を飲んできた。
いち日本人として、
いちサッカーファンとして、
やっぱりかと思ってしまう気持ちも
少なからずあった。
しかし、今大会の日本代表は
大きな期待感を抱かせてくれる。
見ていて、何か起こしてくれそうな、
そんな雰囲気を感じずにはいられない。
決勝トーナメント一回戦、
相手は、王国、ブラジル。
いきなり、優勝候補。
そんな気持ちとは裏腹に、
でも、勝ってくれるんじゃないか
そんな期待を抱くことができる。
決して勝つ可能性が
高いわけではないかもしれない。
しかし、絶対に勝てる試合はないし、
絶対に負けると決まっている試合もない。
王国を撃破し、ベスト16、ベスト8へ勝ち進み、
優勝という誰もが登頂を夢見る
偉大な山の頂へとたどり着いてほしい。
日本サッカーのこれまでの
数十年の真価が
本当の意味で
問われる試合になる。
決勝トナーメントで優勝経験国と
対戦したことはない。
負けたら終わりの
ノックアウトステージで、
王国ブラジルとの試合がある。
選手からしたら、おいおいと思っている
部分もあるかもしれないが、
いちサッカーファンとしては、
こんなに楽しみな試合はない。
ワクワクする。
心が躍る。
やっぱり、サッカーは熱くなれるな。
ワールドカップは最高だ。
終わらないでほしいという思いを抱えながら、
これからも勝ち進んでいく日本を信じて
応援し続けたいと思う。

Japan have officially qualified for the World Cup knockout stage for the third consecutive tournament.
They finished the group stage with one win, two draws, and five points. More importantly, it was the first time in the nation's history that Japan advanced from the group stage without losing a single match.
It was another sign of just how far this team has come.
The final group match against Sweden was never going to be easy.
On paper, it ended as a draw.
But beneath that result, there was another battle taking place.
Both teams were carefully considering how they wanted to finish the group, knowing that the results in other groups—and particularly the outcome of the Netherlands' match—could affect their path through the knockout stage.
No matter which side of the bracket you end up on, there are no easy matches at a World Cup.
Still, if you're seriously aiming to become world champions, there are certainly draws that you would rather have than others.
What impressed me most, though, was something else.
Japan is no longer simply asking, "Can we qualify?"
Instead, they're asking, "How should we qualify?"
That alone represents tremendous progress.
It's been 24 years since Japan first reached the knockout stage at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, which Japan co-hosted with South Korea.
I'm now 26 years old.
That means the Japanese national team has spent almost my entire lifetime growing into a team that can realistically think about where they want to finish in the group, rather than simply hoping to survive.
Over the years, Japan has had its dreams shattered time and time again by the world's football giants.
So many times, we've come agonizingly close before falling just one step short.
As both a Japanese supporter and a lifelong football fan, there were moments when I couldn't help but think,
"Maybe this is as far as we can go."
But this team feels different.
Watching them play, I genuinely feel that they are capable of achieving something special.
There's an atmosphere around this squad that makes you believe anything is possible.
Their reward in the Round of 16?
Brazil.
The Kingdom of Football.
One of the tournament favorites.
On paper, it's probably one of the toughest opponents Japan could face.
And yet...
For some reason, I still believe Japan can win.
I'm not saying they're the favorites.
Far from it.
But football has taught us something over and over again.
There is no such thing as a match you are guaranteed to win.
And there is no such thing as a match you are guaranteed to lose.
I hope Japan can overcome Brazil, reach the quarter-finals, keep advancing, and continue climbing toward the summit that every football nation dreams of reaching—the World Cup trophy.
This match will be the true test of everything Japanese football has built over the past few decades.
Japan has never faced a former World Cup champion in the knockout stage.
Now, in a win-or-go-home match, they'll stand across from Brazil.
The players might be thinking,
"Seriously? Brazil?"
But as a football fan, I honestly couldn't ask for a more exciting match.
I can't wait.
My heart is already racing.
Moments like these remind me why I love football so much.
The World Cup truly is something special.
Part of me never wants this tournament to end.
So I'll keep believing in this team and cheering them on, hoping their incredible journey continues for just a little while longer.
