Dead-Time Optimization and Thermal Design
— The True Optimum Is Defined by Temperature, Not Efficiency —
1. Introduction
In the design of inverters and DC–DC converters, dead time is often treated as a control parameter. However, in real products, dead time should not be optimized only from a control or efficiency standpoint.
Dead time directly affects:
Loss → Heat generation → Device temperature → Reliability
Therefore, dead-time optimization is fundamentally a thermal design problem.
This article discusses how dead time influences thermal behavior and how to determine an optimal dead time from a thermal perspective.
