Quantitative Evaluation of Dead-Time Loss in Power Converters
1. Introduction
Dead time is an essential control parameter in power converters using half-bridge or full-bridge configurations. It prevents shoot-through by ensuring that the upper and lower switching devices are never turned on simultaneously. However, while dead time improves reliability, it inevitably introduces additional losses and output voltage distortion.
To optimize efficiency and performance, it is important not only to understand qualitatively how dead time causes loss, but also to evaluate dead-time loss quantitatively. This article explains practical methods to estimate dead-time-related losses in power converters.
