Episode 1: “Grilled Fish and the White Seagull”
Leaving the mansion, Nyamda stepped through the gate for the first time.
The cold winter wind blew deep into her fur.
She wrapped her scarf tightly around her neck and gripped the straps of her backpack.
He had lived his entire life within those walls.
Carpeted floors, sunlit sofas, slow-paced days.
Having his fish bones picked clean was simply expected.
Everything changed the day his master vanished.
“...Let's go.”
He murmured, taking one step, then another.
Nyamda's tiny footsteps were swallowed by the cobblestones.
*
Out in the town, sounds and smells overflowed.
The sweet scent of the bakery, the distant clang of railroad crossing bells,
and most intense of all... the smell of fish.
“Fish~, fresh this morning! One plate for a hundred yen!”
Around the corner, a stall vendor bellowed.
Freshly grilled horse mackerel lay in rows, crisp and fragrant.
Nyamda's stomach growled.
The savory scent made his front paws involuntarily take one step, then another, toward the stall.
But—.
Something shiny caught his eye on the plate.
It was white and slender, looking almost like a trap.
Bones.
Nyamda's body froze.
An old memory stuck in the back of his throat.
That sharp, prickly pain, like something stuck in his throat.
The bones his master had removed so many times.
The moment he saw it, his appetite vanished completely.
“Oh my, you look troubled, traveler cat.”
Suddenly, a voice came from behind.
Turning around, he saw a white seagull perched on a wooden crate.
“You're hungry. But you're scared of bones. That's the look on your face.”
The seagull chuckled, clicking its beak.
“...How did you know?”
“Because I used to be the same way.”
The seagull folded its wings and leaned forward slightly.
"But you know, bones aren't all bad.
Fish can swim straight because of their bones.
In other words, having bones means having a direction to go."
“...A direction to go...”
Nyamda reached into his backpack.
Inside lay the silver fish bone remover his master had used.
The cold metal's touch suddenly reminded him of those days.
“I've never taken bones out myself.”
“Then now's the time, isn't it?”
The seagull spread its wings.
"A journey is also about finding your own way.
There's more than one way to remove bones.
Just take a bite first. Even with bones, you'll be fine."
Nyamda hesitated for a moment,
then looked at the plate of grilled fish again.
It was a little scary.
But more than that, there was a slight—thrill.
