はじめに
イランとアメリカの緊張や戦争のニュースを目にすると、
遠く離れた場所に暮らす私たちは、
何もできないように感じることがあります。
政治を動かす力も、
軍事を止める力も、
多くの一般市民は持っていません。
そんなとき、ふと浮かぶ思いがあります。
「祈ることしかできない」。
けれど、その祈りは
本当に無力なのでしょうか。
Introduction
When we see news about rising tensions
or the shadow of war between countries such as Iran and the United States,
many of us who live far away feel that there is nothing we can do.
Most ordinary people have no power to change politics
and no way to stop military actions directly.
In those moments, a simple thought often appears:
“All we can do is pray.”
But is prayer truly powerless?
異なる宗教の神々と、人の命
世界にはさまざまな宗教があります。
イランにはイスラム教の祈りがあり、
アメリカにはキリスト教の祈りがあります。
神の名前や信仰の形は違っていても、
そこには共通する願いがあります。
それは、
人の命が守られることです。
自分の家族が無事であるように、
大切な人が生きて戻ってくるように、
平和な日常が壊れないように。
祈りの言葉や儀礼の形は違っても、
命を守りたいという願いは、
世界の多くの場所で共有されています。
Different Faiths, One Wish to Protect Life
There are many religions in the world.
In Iran, Islamic prayers rise each day.
In the United States, many people pray within the Christian tradition.
The names of God may differ,
and the rituals may vary.
Yet beneath these differences lies a shared human hope:
that life will be protected.
People wish for their families to be safe,
for their loved ones to return home alive,
and for the peaceful rhythm of daily life not to be shattered.
Even if the words and forms of prayer are different,
the wish to protect life
is shared in many parts of the world.
日本の信仰にある「祈り」
日本には古くから、祈りの文化があります。
神道では、神を論理で説明する教義よりも、
人が神の前でどのような心を持つかが
大切にされてきました。
豊作を祈り、
災いが起きないように祈り、
家族や社会の平穏を祈る。
それは、大きな力を持たない人びとが、
自然や目に見えない存在に向かって
静かに願いを託してきた文化でもあります。
今日でも、多くの人が
初詣や人生の節目に神社に足を運び、
手を合わせて祈りを捧げます。
自他の命を尊ぶ形としての信仰は、
人や地域によってさまざまです。
神道は、その違いを否定するのではなく、
自分たちの祈りを大切にしながら、
他者のあり方も静かに尊重してきた信仰だと言えるでしょう。
Prayer in Japanese (Shinto) Tradition
Japan has long had a deep culture of prayer.
In Shinto, the focus is not mainly on doctrines
that logically explain the gods,
but on the heart of the person
standing before the sacred.
People pray for good harvests,
for protection from disasters,
and for peace in their families and communities.
For centuries, ordinary people with little visible power
have quietly entrusted their hopes
to nature and to unseen presences.
Even today, many people visit shrines at New Year
or at important turning points in life
to place their hands together and offer a prayer.
Forms of faith that honor life
vary from person to person and place to place.
Shinto does not deny these differences.
Rather, it cherishes its own way of praying
while quietly respecting the paths of others.
守りたいもの
私たち人類は、
繰り返される戦争の中で、
人びとの命だけでなく、
その国や地域の文化を象徴する建物や、
長い時間をかけて育まれてきた自然までも
破壊してきた歴史を持っています。
それらは、
どれほどのお金を払っても
取り戻すことのできないものばかりです。
どうか、これからは
そのような尊いすべての存在が
守られますように。
この祈りは、特定の宗教に限られたものではなく、
命を大切にしたいと願う多くの人びとに
共通する思いでもあるはずです。
What We Hope to Protect
Throughout human history,
war has destroyed not only human lives,
but also cultural buildings
and natural landscapes shaped over long periods of time.
These are things
that no amount of money can truly restore.
From now on,
may all of these precious forms of life, culture, and nature
be protected.
This prayer is not limited to any one religion.
It is a feeling shared by many people
who wish to cherish and protect life.
結び
形は違っても、
祈る心が願う世界は
どこか似ているのかもしれません。
自分たちが大切に継承してきたものを守りながら、
互いの命と文化を尊重し合い、
ともに生きていく道を
探していきたい。
神道の祈りもまた、
そのためのひとつの在り方です。
祈りの心は、
見えない世界で重なり合い、
静かに共鳴しているのかもしれません。
Ending
Even if the forms are different,
the world our praying hearts long for
may be more similar than we think.
As we protect what has been carefully passed down to us,
we can also seek ways
to respect each other’s lives and cultures
and live together.
Shinto prayer is one such way
of walking this path.
Perhaps the hearts that pray
are quietly overlapping and resonating
in a world we cannot see.
