Ken's episode â Our strength as Japanese? æ¥æ¬äººãšããŠã®åŒ·ã¿-
This time, I heard from Ken, who is working in New York City. How can we as Japanese figure out our strengths in a competitive workplace like in New York? Let's see.

(Hiro) What brought you here?
(Ken) I am working for a system company, where I applied for a short-term oversea trainee program. The only clear requirement was that I had to score 700 or greater in TOEIC. I decided to apply in 2013 April, passed the selection.
(Hiro) Can you freely chose the place?
(Ken) No, our company has some branch offices in other overseas counties, but I could not choose where we work as a trainee.

(Hiro) How did you study English before and after coming here?
(Ken) In Japan I went to a professional English school sponsored by my company. In the school, I mainly studied speaking and listening for two days and more than two hours per week, two to three months. I found it very instrumental because the teacher immediately pointed out my weakness and provided me with tips about how to improve it. Here in New York, I have tried many things such as taking private English lessons from a Japanese whose English is like a native, online English conversation, reading some books which my colleagues recommended.

(Hiro) Then, please let us know what you are doing here!
(Ken) There are two types of tasks that I'm doing; the one that I proceed with foreign colleagues and that I coordinate with a parent company in Japan. With respect to the former, as an IT project manager and engineer, I manage my projects with the help of foreign colleagues and clients. The latter looks like a liaison, with such tasks as arranging a meeting and serving as an interpreter. The balance between the two is somewhat 7:3, with the first incessantly happening and the second intermittently.

(Ken) I have my individual work and meetings at my office from 9am to 6pm, and after then I have some dialogue with Tokyo head office until 9pm. I seldom go outside of the office except for a conference with IT vendors.
(Hiro) Are your projects short-term or long-term ones?
(Ken) One year at the longest, a week at the shortest.
(Hiro) How large is your project team?
(Ken) We have around six people as a âcore memberâ gathered from different specialties (network, security etc). Honestly I don't have subordinates but have two bosses to report. This team looks rather like a flat structure.

(Hiro) What startled you after coming here?
(Ken) As for working style, you may think people here basically work only from 9 to 5, however it is not necessarily true. That is to say, many people tend to work remotely after having dinner with their families.
(Hiro) Does that mean without working remotely you cannot finish your work?
(Ken) To some extent yes. We really value our moments with family.
(Hiro) Is there any specific task that you cannot do without staying at your office?
(Ken) I believe not so much.
(Hiro) Then, is there any task that only a specific person can perform?
(Ken) Yes in most cases, as we rely on each one's specialty. In addition, there is a culture of fully enjoying your right of taking days off, and we basically don't care about what will happen during our vacation at the office. In my view, there are two types of workers; âArchitectâ and âOperaterâ.âArchitectâ is hard to be replaced by others.
With regard to my daily life, living expenses are extremely high and we are hesitant to use bathrooms outside (as there are not as many supermarkets as in Japan). Other than that, the life here is quite convenient because we can make the most of Amazon, Uber etc.

(Hiro) Could you please share if there is something you're trying to overcome?
(Ken) I've been striving for improving my English, even after a couple of years. Same as my colleagues who have been staying here for a longer period than me. It may signal that we may not be able toreach the listening proficiency at a native's level even though we make efforts. Although I feel some considerations because my company is essentially an oversea branch of a Japanese company, sometimes I could not catch up with the discussion with vendors without recording.
(Hiro) How do you improve your English?
(Ken) The more we converse a person, the more accustomed we become to the person's English. Right after coming here I had a lunch with my project team every day, where I found it very challenging because it was difficult to anticipate the next topic of this daily conversation. Sometimes I felt out of place because I asked some questions which was covered previously, but without trying we can never improve. Moreover, trying to get a certificate of IT technology helped me acquire systematic knowledge of this field.

(Hiro) Is there any episode that is still lingering in your mind?
(Ken) Honestly, before I came here, I did not have confidence in myself to work here since I was not proficient in English, I did not have any specialty as foreigners here have. However, I realized through my work here that even doing a daunting task that many people find too detailed and bothersome and want to avoid could be a strength, which I believe I acquired through my schooling. For example, I marshalled my colleague's visions into documents and get management's approval one by one, by which I could win trust from them.
(Hiro) Oh glad to see how our diligence works!
(Ken) Americans tend to think that âwe are not bounded by a meaningless ruleâ. Sometimes we had a hard time in group discussion as everyone had their strong opinions. Although sometime heated, I like the atmosphere that we can even make a harsh comment as long as it makes sense.

(Hiro) Lastly, whatâs your message to those who are considering working abroad?
(Ken) I strongly recommend working abroad to those who have NOT studied abroad, are NOT proficient in English and NOT interested in English culture. Many companies have similar oversea trainees but many of those who get this opportunity is different from me. But I strongly believe that a kind of âdomesticâ person like me should jump to this chance. Diligence and tenaciousness cultivated by education in schools would certainly be our strengths in the U.S. I don't think English proficiency matters unless you are as good as a native person because everyone has to make efforts. I would like somebody who is not that talkative, is negative but has some pride, like me, to work abroad.
