They rushed to the thicket to cut back the weeds and prevent their resurgence, though they were deeply taken aback and sank into a sense of humiliation for having failed to discover the thicket on their own.

After a while, the hunter returned and uncovered another grave issue that sent shockwaves through the entire garden. His discovery was linked to recent, recurring grave offenses committed against innocent trees in the garden, some of which had escalated into outright destruction.

Upon noticing this, a select group of gardeners began a serious investigation into the cases, revealing that these offenses were being committed by harmful insects lurking in the garden. In fact, they even managed to capture some of the perpetrators. These pests looked no different from the beneficial insects which have assisted with botanical pollination, soil improvement, and natural pest control. Thus, they were extremely hard to identify, yet incredibly wild and dangerous. Once they targeted innocent trees rich in nutrients, they would intrude into the roots and leech off them. They accomplished these crimes by any means necessary, including cutting off the trees’ lifelines to bring their growth to a dead halt.

However, the deeper they pursued them to their full depth, the more organized and complex the crimes appeared. Each offense was committed in concert with roughly ten accomplices, each playing a specific role, such as a criminal mastermind, an intermediary, and a frontline perpetrator. As a result, once the heinous acts began, the perpetrators were not allowed to pause or back out, as doing so would likely result in their own death. In short, the gardeners’ investigation illustrated that as these insect groups became organized, their crimes escalated in brutality.

Their further inquiry uncovered that these syndicate operations were managed under the control of a headquarters located in an entirely different garden. A few high-ranking members at that headquarters issued their directives for every crime committed here. In addition, they organized support cells to assist the local criminals by, for example, collecting information on the potential targets and even impersonating garden authorities to contact them. In return for that, the local pests were required to capture and traffic new insects back to the headquarters.

While these systemic operations were deeply troubling, the hunter's latest discovery was what truly caused turmoil throughout the estate: the leader of the criminal headquarters had been dwelling inside this very garden all along. This fresh disclosure caused turmoil throughout the garden. In other words, while the gardeners were struggling to arrest low-level offenders and expose the details of this organized crime syndicate, the mastermind had moved in, living there with brazen ease for a long time. While he forced his subordinates to traffic their acquaintances and commit critical offenses, the leader peacefully enjoyed the luxury of this garden. What a disgrace.

当然ながら、ハンターはこの深刻な問題を庭師たちに突きつけ、彼らに凄まじい衝撃を与えました。庭師たちは大慌てで茂みに駆けつけ、雑草を刈り取り、二度と再発しないよう手を尽くしましたが……自分たちの力でその茂みを発見できなかった屈辱感とバツの悪さで、すっかり意気消沈してしまいました。

　それからしばらくして、ハンターが再び戻ってきて同じように探索を行うと、今度は庭園全体を震撼させるほどの、さらなる重大事件を暴き出すことになります。その発見は、この庭園で最近頻発していた、無辜（むこ）の木々に対する凄惨な襲撃事件、それも一部は「命を奪う（枯らせる）」までにエスカレートしていた一連の事件へと繋がっていきました。

　ここに及んで、ようやく「選り抜きの（暇な）庭師たち」が本格的な捜査に乗り出し、これらの凶行が庭園に潜む有害な害虫どもによって組織的に行われていたことを突き止めました。実際、犯人の一部を捕らえることにも成功したのです。厄介なことに、これらの害虫は、植物の受粉を手伝ったり、土壌を改良したり、あるいは害虫を駆除してくれたりする「益虫」たちと見分けがつきませんでした。そのため特定が極めて困難だったのですが、その正体は狂暴極まりない危険分子だったのです。彼らは栄養をたっぷりと蓄えた罪のない木を標的に定めると、根の中に侵入して栄養を徹底的に吸い上げます。彼らは目的を達成するためなら手段を選ばず、木々の成長を完全にストップさせるために、その生命線を切断することすら厭いませんでした。

　しかし、庭師たちが事件の闇を深追いすればするほど、犯罪の全容はより組織的で複雑なものであることが浮き彫りになっていきました。それぞれの事件は、およそ10匹の共犯者による見事な連携のもとで実行されており、そこには「犯罪の首謀者」「仲介役」「現場の実行犯」といった具合に、明確な役割分担がなされていたのです。結果として、一度その冷酷な凶行が始まってしまえば、実行犯たちは途中で立ち止まることも、足を洗うことも許されません。なぜなら、途中で諦めることは、自らの死を意味するからです。要するに、庭師たちの捜査が証明したのは、「虫けらどもがひとたび組織化すると、その犯罪はどこまでも残虐化する」という事実でした。

　彼らのさらなる追及により、これらの一連の組織犯罪は、全く別の庭園にある「本部」のコントロール下に置かれていることが判明しました。その本部に鎮座する数名の幹部どもが、この庭園で発生するすべての犯罪に細かな指示を出していたのです。それだけではありません。彼らは現地の犯罪者を支援する「サポート部隊」まで組織し、標的になりそうな木の情報を集めたり、あろうことか「庭園の警察当局」に成りすまして標的に接触したりしていました。その見返りとして、現地の害虫たちは、新しい虫を捕らえては本部に送り届ける（人身売買ならぬ虫身売買をする）よう義務付けられていたのです。

　このような組織的な暗躍だけでも十分に胸糞の悪い話ですが、ハンターが最後にもたらした新事実は、庭園全体を真のパニックに陥れることになりました。なんと、その犯罪本部のトップが、最初からこの庭園の中に堂々と住み着いていたというのです。庭師たちが末端の犯罪者を捕まえるのに躍起になり、組織の全容を暴こうと必死に汗を流しているその裏で、黒幕であるボスは、長年にわたり何食わぬ顔でこの庭園に紛れ込み、信じられないほど優雅に暮らしていたのでございます。部下たちには「知り合いを本部に売り飛ばせ」だの「重大な犯罪を実行しろ」だのと命令して私腹を肥やす一方で、リーダー自身はこの美しい庭園のラグジュアリーな生活を、平和に満喫していたというわけです。

……いやはや、実に見下げ果てた、恥知らずなお話でございますね。
