Samurai Blue(サムライブルー)-2

(in the style of the Guardian by ChatGPT)

Japan shared the spoils with Sweden in their third FIFA World Cup group match, earning the point they needed to progress to the knockout stage. It was every bit as tense as expected. Much as they had struggled to unlock the Netherlands in the opening half of their previous game, Japan found it difficult to break down a disciplined Swedish defence and went into the interval goalless. They eventually broke the deadlock after the restart, only to see their lead cancelled out. Even so, it was an accomplished display. Sweden’s dangerous strike partnership was kept remarkably quiet, while Japan absorbed sustained pressure in the closing stages with composure and resilience. Among the standout performers was the 39-year-old Yuto Nagatomo, whose intelligent movement and boundless energy belied his age. The result secured second place in the group and set up a mouth-watering last-16 meeting with fifth-ranked Brazil on 30 June.

The fixture inevitably takes me back to Japan’s meeting with Brazil at the 2006 World Cup. I watched that game over a beer in a bar at Los Angeles International Airport. Japan’s surprise opener lifted not only my spirits but also those of the people around me. The optimism proved short-lived. Brazil eventually moved through the gears and swept Japan aside 4–1. I remember accepting the defeat with surprising calm, but this time feels different. Expectations of this Samurai Blue side are far higher. Brazil remain overwhelming favourites, yet I believe Japan are capable of making a genuine contest of it—and, at the very least, keeping me on the edge of my seat.

Before any of that, however, I must solve a rather more immediate problem. The match kicks off at two o’clock in the morning. If I go to bed at my usual time, getting up for kick-off will be a formidable challenge. Staying awake until then is hardly any easier. Worse still, even if I manage it, I may repeat what happened during the match against the Netherlands and drift off before the final whistle. At the moment, I have yet to come up with a foolproof plan that will allow me both to wake up in time and to stay awake until the end.

What surprises me most is the depth of my own investment in this team. With every tournament, my attachment to the Samurai Blue seems to grow stronger. Perhaps that is simply one of the privileges—or consequences—of getting older.
