Yeah, it's not only looking at the past with rose-tinted glasses or nostalgia, but various types of entertainment industries were different not that long ago. More creative, less "plastic". Sure, you could see that, obviously, many of those songs, movies, video games, were made to earn money, so they had to pander to a wider audience to some degree. But at the same time the creators were more likely to try something new, they were more creative to stand out, whereas nowadays it's just sanitized corporate slop (like, literally xD) and/or copy-pasted, "safe" gameplay templates repeated over and over again, with games from different genres looking and playing weirdly similar, lmao. Gamers brought that sad reality upon themselves, though. People keep buying pre-orders for franchises that disappointed them several times already, they expect a high level quality of a new product and (rightfully) complain when a game is far from good, only to repeat the same process once the new game is announced... And some of them then wonder why big studios don't even bother trying anymore. Like you noticed, if I were a publisher, I wouldn't try hard either, to be fair. Why sweat over a product if you can just release a half-baked, lazy one and there might be even shills defending its shortcomings for free? xD It reminds me of that situation with the infamous DLC for Oblivion. You know, the horse armor one. I like to mention it on various occasions, because it really shows how the general audience succumbed to consoomerism without even noticing it. Something that used to be criticized for various reasons (mostly because of the price set for such a relatively minimal content), ridiculed, which was also something that some folks warned about (I remember my and other people's posts on one forum warning that this may turn from a weird curio into an actual trend), became quickly a standard in the industry.

Ohh, I agree that surfing the old Internet felt quite adventurous, heh. Now everything is consolidated into a few giant social media platforms that feel completely dead and algorithms pushing the same recycled garbage. Even articles supposedly written by "actual journalists" are mostly lazy machine translations from foreign websites copypasted without even checking if something looks weird after translation, or inaccurate, lol.

Damn, I'm really sorry about what happened to your best friend as well. That sounds like an absolute nightmare to go through for both of you. Thanks for sharing all that. I'm really sorry to hear about the hellish time both you and your best friend went through with the healthcare system and quacks that are not rare to spot, no matter the country. Battling an autoimmune disease for 15+ years with zero real answers from doctors sounds absolutely exhausting. I've seen that exact same pattern way too often as well, where doctors have no clue what's actually going on, but blindly throw meds at you with a "this new one will definitely work, trust me bro" mindset, while completely waving off side effects as if they're not even possible, lmao. Props to you for digging into actual research papers on your own to take things into your own hands, even if in a limited way ('cause I can easily imagine that kind of health problems having to be dealt with prescriptions of meds made by a qualified doctor, if they are open enough to be convinced that perhaps their, dunno, old-fashioned way of dealing with particular illnesses might not be the best these days); but it also shows a rather grim landscape of the healthcare system's condition, sadly. It really is massively disappointing how often people are left to fend for themselves when the "experts" fail them. Imagine that kind of neglect present in other fields of work, ugh.

As for my friend, well, he's stable. He's struggling with med addiction of sorts, but it's rather stable in general. I wouldn't lie if I said that he's like a shell, a shadow of his former self, but still better than he was while attending those therapies and sinking a lot of money into them, all while having next medicine prescribed by the doctor. Funnily enough, the support from his family and friends, and resigning from the services of "soul doctors" like those therapeutic shamans call themselves sometimes, was the first step in a relatively positive mental recovery. At least it's something that both his parents, me, and other friends noticed.
It's not like I demonize therapy, even if a little, but I think that while it can work in certain fields (i.e. therapy sessions meant to support in fighting alcoholism), it can totally fail in many others while being labeled as something miraculous. Heck, I don't know anyone who'd attend therapy and actually felt better in a meaningful way.

Moving to the subject of hardware, yeah, those new GPU functionalities are sure fun and have their purpose, but I don't think of them as mandatory for absolutely every kind of consumer. DLSS or FSR? There are people out there, like me for example, who are unphased by it. RTX? I don't mind having it off. Game engines can generate gorgeous visuals for a typical consumer without this stuff, and weaker rigs can benefit from getting a boost in performance (even if a little). DLSS 5? I ain't even thinking about using this AI filter disguised as something else while playing vidya, lmao. But, alas and again, it sells and people demand more, so why even think about any budget version of a GPU, or even bothering to create one, when there is a high demand for the more complex and pricey stuff? It's just business and while it is a bummer for me as a consumer, I would do the exact same thing if I were in the publishers' or hardware makers' shoes, to be honest. Once again - why bother offering alternatives when those who buy that stuff don't want them (no matter if they are actually using those "wow cool essential" functionalities or not). Same with older hardware. Why sell it for lower if people will buy it anyway for the full price from several years ago? ;D

Yeah, the black-and-white mentality is just exhausting, lol. Rage and hot takes bring clicks, while actual nuance gets ignored, so people treat literally everything like a sports match now. I fully agree with the part about algorithms. It seems to feed on basic searches, but feeds the most when someone gets super specific, just so it can train itself better, heh. "Algorithm is eating well these days", as one would say, lmao.

Ah, I think I've heard of that game, but I've never played it. Good to know, hehe. Yeah, I can totally see how that could be confusing, given that both Observer and Cyberpunk 2077 share the same cyberpunk theme and come from Polish studios, lol.

Fair points! I hope you don't mind if I'll just wrap up my thoughts on the main stuff down below, treating all sections as one. :)

We're totally on the same page when it comes to the whole FOMO weirdness and media decay. Mainstream stuff felt corporate, sanitized, and completely soulless way before gen AI even showed up, and AI is just speeding up what greed already started in the past, sadly. Finding actual high effort stuff nowadays is just getting harder and harder. One gets to dig way deeper than before, and finding "gems" of all kinds on the Internet is very, very hard compared to, say, 10 years ago. It's not impossible to discover really great content, sure, but yeah, it's possibly the clearest sign of artistic decay that discovering such content became hard enough to sometimes not find anything other than the aforementioned plastic, sanitized stuff meant to be monetized first and foremost, lol.

And yeah, forced integration can be annoying as heck. Some dislike it appearing as the first searching result, some complain about it taking the revenue potential from rather niche websites (compared to the biggest ones), but as for me, I dislike how resource-consuming it is. I don't mind AI overviews, but I'd appreciate if I could ask for it myself when in need, instead of, dunno, using Google to look for totally basic things and getting a quick rundown on all types of them right off the bat, lmao. The tool itself isn't bad per se, but it doesn't mean there is no space for improvements (because some improvements could really work well).

Cramming half-baked AI features and unoptimized AI functionalities for the sake of having them into many apps and devices whether it makes sense or not is exhausting. I prefer functionality first, heh. Corpos are just in a gold rush right now, caring way more about the actual trend than making anything useful, lol. At least I see it this way.

When it comes to libraries becoming obsolete for people looking for basic info, to me that's just standard technological progress, and a ridiculously convenient one at that. People are lazy in general, but that laziness is also what motivates us to invent cool, convenient stuff in the first place - even if that same laziness leads to some pretty questionable inventions (like totally healthy people getting addicted to food delivery services when the restaurant is literally a two-minute walk away, or those absurdly overpriced coffee capsules, lmao). Sure, real academic work, niche historical texts, and deep-dive scientific books still mean physically hitting up university libraries, which are usually packed with students anyway. In plenty of fields, relying strictly on digitized media and ignoring anything that is not available on-line while writing a serious paper or, ugh, conducting actual research can be completely inefficient, if not straight-up wrong.

But for basic info? The internet is more than enough to grab a quick rundown or look up simple details, and physical libraries are still thriving regardless. Personally, I way prefer reading real, physical books, so I've been hitting up my local library regularly for years. I know that's just my own anecdotal experience and shouldn't be used as some ultimate proof that libraries are still relevant, despite all those technological changes, but yeah, I've definitely noticed my local branch getting way more crowded over the last few years, heh. Maybe it's a sign of that "library renaissance" you highlighted earlier! :)

About the "ChatGPT doctor", I saw the example you mentioned with my own eyes. I caught a cold and my doctor asked ChatGPT on her tablet about totally basic shit to prescribe me generic meds that I had prescribed several years ago, lmao. xD I don't blame AI here at all, but lazy doctors who act like quacks. Same with therapy. If some folks can benefit more, and for free, from talking with a chatbot, then it does say a lot about quality of therapeutic services and counseling. I know a person who lost a lot of money on therapies and fell into deeper depression after several therapeutists in a row belittled their problems. If not family and their friends (well, me included), I dunno what kind of further mental deterioration they'd have gone through. Various things presented right away from the chat bot (I didn't ask which one) and understanding (fake? yeah, as fake as human therapists should be to professionally conduct a therapy session) did better than "searching for a better therapist" over and over again.

Where we disagree a bit is probably the hardware and long-term future, though I get where you're coming from. Rising tech prices suck and hit consumer wallets hard right now, no arguments there. Same with "muh RAM and SSD" being just a tip of the iceberg of stuff that became pricer due to AI implemented anyway and consuming resources. My point was more about looking at hardware cycles in the bigger scheme of things, but yeah, short-to-medium term it definitely looks a lot more grim than promising for the average guy. Heck, I don't believe myself that this almost mythical prognosis of "price rise calming down / prices becoming normal again" will happen. Not with this whole "gamer culture". I can see the scenario similar to that GPU prices rise due to cryptomining trend. Eventually the prices stopped rising, but it's not like they returned to more or less similar levels than before that trend. Gamers complained, but purchased any next pricy GPU for that 3 frames per second rise anyway, so I'm not surprised at all that the companies didn't lower the prices after the whole situation stabilized. Sadly, I think it will be the same with RAM and SSD.

Spot on with that last part though. Even if big corpos do whatever they want at the end of the day, calling out bad practices and lazy tech is still way better than just complete apathy, heh. However, unfortunately, the whole discourse seems to have been dominated by extreme takes. Balanced comments and sincere, complex or simply constructive feedbacks have been getting lost in the flood of shills vs. haters "war", and I don't see it changing anytime soon.

On a side note, is that image that you posted from Cyberpunk 2077? I played this game long ago, but I think that I saw something similar in this game (I mean, a fancy, futuristic helmet similar to that one, although I am aware it could be from a different modern game).

Totally agree. The Covid era definitely fast-tracked that whole trend of speed-running through content, skimming headlines, and dropping emotional takes just to stay in line with wherever the crowd is leaning that day. Plus, so many people are driven by pure FOMO. They're so terrified of being the odd one out that they just echo the loudest voice in the room instead of actually forming an opinion. Like you said, it's not even genuine outrage half the time - just bandwagon noise driven, more often than not, by overwhelmingly strong emotions.

Maybe it's also just human nature to label everyone. You dislike superhero movies? You're labeled a "snob" or a "pretentious cinephile". You see positive aspects of AI in various fields? Then you're an "AI bro, destroyer of culture". And so on. A simple world made of only positive and negative opinions is obviously convenient for anyone looking at the world, and the people in it, through a purely binary lens. And that dopamine boost is definitely getting dialed up by the algorithms you mentioned. They notice whats hip at the moment and what brings attention, and suggest other similar things. That's why ragebaits have been so popular for many years already, lol.

I call this awkward trend "consumemaxxing", which I see as basically a mix of FOMO-driven "must-consume content! you can't miss it!" urgency, and rushing through stuff as fast as humanly possible just so you don't fall behind and can move on to the next product, lmao.

I don't get people who watch anime at 4x speed. I feel like it makes those shows unwatchable and impossible to take seriously, dubbed or not. Heck, there are people who watch action-heavy anime not just at 2x speed, which is already pretty crazy, but, like you said, at 4x speed, simply because a few scenes feature characters talking instead of flexing their newly developed, space-bending attack or whatever. ;D

Same. That's why I find it half-funny and half-pitiful to see so many people basing their opinions heavily - or even entirely (?!) - on what everyone else thinks. Just watch the show in peace, enjoy it (or don't), and share your thoughts if you feel like it. There's no need to constantly hunt and search for validation.

Long before any of this, digital tools had already turned everything into plastic, overly sanitized art, with half of these self-proclaimed "artists" just tracing stuff anyway. So whether it's a human doing glorified tracing and/or putting a filter over "their" drawing, or a machine generating pixels, I don't really see much of a difference. Or maybe I'm just too fond of traditional art, who knows? ;p

Even the point about people getting lazy with research is obviously true (like folks mindlessly looking for easy answers to complex questions, then uncritically accepting whatever reply AI spews out - even blatant hallucinations that anyone could spot if they actually read the response before copying it, lmao), but it still feels like history repeating itself. I remember people saying the exact same thing when the internet first replaced library research through Google and Wikipedia: that it would kill critical thinking and make everyone dependent on quick shortcuts. While it definitely had its drawbacks, the pros outweighed the cons in the long run and it bore good fruit. AI as a tool has the potential to reach that same level of universal usefulness one day. It's really just up to how responsibly people choose to use it, heh.

Oh yeah, that's spot on. AI should be used as a tool, not a replacement, at least until it becomes advanced enough to eliminate the risk of stupid mistakes or weird omissions. Arguments that humans may do them are invalid, as AI is meant to eliminate those mistakes and increase efficiency.

This conversation reminded me of that joke where an AI doctor amputates the wrong leg, and when the patient complains, its response is that generic ChatGPT line: "You are totally right! I made a mistake. Naturally, the leg that was meant to be amputated wasn't the left one, but the right one. Shall we proceed with the surgery?" xD

You can already catch a glimpse of how reckless people get with AI just by looking at "vibe coding". Sure, the code might technically run fairy well, but it's usually bloated, messy, and unnecessarily convoluted. It's the exact same kind of spaghetti code a rookie programmer would churn out, except I doubt any actual employer would be satisfied with that result, lol.

At the end of the day, people just want to avoid overworking themselves, which is just basic human nature. But I think AI gets way too demonized when people reduce it down to generated pictures or lazy game design, calling to burn it all to the ground like a bunch of neo-Luddites. It's already pulling off amazing results in fields like, dunno, logistics and scientific research. Honestly, if the trade-off for those kinds of breakthroughs is pricier consumer RAM for certain period of time, or a flood of brainrot memes, that might not be such a bad deal in the grand scheme of things, lol. That's my point of view, anyway. At the end of a day it has the same weight as one of neo-Luddite's seething, AI shill's glazing, or a hobo asking for a coin. Powerful and rich people represented by corporations will do whatever they want anyway. Corporations will line up behind whatever is more profitable and promising, regardless of what any online faction is yelling about on a given day.

Yeah, I was surprised to hear people calling Chainsaw Man problematic or excessively gory. Like you said, it's pretty timid compared to retro anime classics that leaned into that whole slasher vibe. Oh well. I don't have anything against those "problematic themes" in CSM, whatever people actually think they are. Although it's hilarious watching people yap about Makima's wrongdoings while completely giving a pass to every other character's sins just because "uh-oh she's pretty ;)" haha. And I say that as someone who actually likes Reze (though not as much as Makima, hehe) and agrees that she's one of the best waifus of the 2020s. ;D

Now that I think about it, if we're looking beyond just the anime, then yeah, the "Makima hate" definitely dates back to THAT specific moment in the manga that hasn't even been adapted yet, lol.

Indeed. Everyone has their own preferences, but I really can't get behind people who trash certain techniques or tools with such intense passion that they seem genuinely emotionally disturbed. I haven't watched "Sidonia no Kishi" myself, but a friend of mine is a big fan, so I've heard a thing or two about how a section of the anime community completely trashed the show without even giving it a chance - simply because it used CGI. Similar thing happened to the Trigun reboot (you know, those generic comments like "it's berserk 2016 all over again :[" popping outta nowhere). To each their own, obviously, but it feels like such a waste of energy to relentlessly hate on things you haven't watched and have zero intention of checking out, haha. Maybe that's just how some people consume media, huh. The shift from cel animation to digital 2D was already pretty fierce in the discussions on the Internet; the CGI and 3D hate train became even worse at some point in the past; and now we're seeing people lose their minds over AI elements being used in anime, even in tiny ways. I can't help but wonder what kind of "my favorite tool and technique are better than yours!" arguments the future will bring, lmao.

I totally agree about Black Lotus. It's a really well-done anime and a very solid entry in the Blade Runner franchise. It has a super cool atmosphere, nice fights with great choreography, and enjoyable music. It's really unfortunate that it wasn't more popular. Its plot was newcomer-friendly too, so it would be easy to follow for people who aren't very familiar - or familiar at all - with the original Blade Runner. Like you said, the creators truly poured their hearts into it. That makes some of the past comments look pretty lame, as folks heavily criticized this anime before watching it (or without even watching it at all, lol) simply because they didn't like the CGI visual style, or weren't fans of anime based on Western franchises. It's nothing wrong to have personal preferences, as all of us do. What's rather bizarre, though, is getting worked up over an anime that clearly doesn't interest a person. I remember some people getting really emotional (in an unhealthy way) over the fact of this anime being made in CGI, lol. Welp. They missed a really cool show, heh.

Oh, and thank you! I do like Makima a lot. She had a pretty concerning losing streak across several editions in a row, but I didn't mind, hehe. I like her, so that's reason enough to nominate her. ;p

how interesting! i'm not terribly surprised you've run into so many people presuming it to be the La Dispute track, it's fairly popular insofar as niche (4th(?) wave) emo/screamo bands are concerned- and King Park is easily their most popular track. i wonder if Original God took influence from La Dispute, or individually came to such hard lyrics independently.

it's a good song to take influence and draw a quote from! it seems somewhere between Cloud Rap ala YL and $uicide boys, both of whom i enjoy yet haven't listened to nearly enough. if you have any other bands to recommend i'm always down to listen to new music.
