English: An ancient stringed instrument, having a body either pear-shaped or boat-shaped and the characteristics of vaulted back and the absence of neck; also a generic modern Arabic term applied by the Mahommedans of northern Africa to various stringed instruments played with a bow.

Historically, "Rebab" as generic name had sometimes referred to plucked string instruments.[1]
See Category:1911 Encyclopædia Britannica/Rebab for an example.

Also, Rebab-style Kemençe (or Kemenche) was historically known in Persia in 13th century (Meragi, c.1400),[1]
and the related instrument in Azerbaijan, Kamança (or Kamancheh), have still kept the similar shape with Rebab.
